Autonomous weapons and drones

Autonomous weapons (killer robots) and accountability under IHL. Cecilie Hellestveit participated in the 2016 CCW meeting of experts on autonomous weapons in Geneva. She gave an invited  presentation  on  Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS) and accountability for IHL violations to diplomats from 130 states. A subsequent volume entitled «Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems – Technology, Definition, Ethics, Law & Security» was edited by Prof. Robin Geiss. Hellestveits contributed with a chapter on Accountability for Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems under International Humanitarian Law (2016),   German Federal Foreign Office, Berlin. pp.135-148.

Academic article on autonomous weapons.  Kjølv Egeland published an article entitled  ‘Lethal Autonomous Weapons under International Humanitarian Law’ in Nordic Journal of International Law, vol. 85, no. 2, 2016.

Drone-policy and international law. Cecilie Hellestveit was invited to a closed expert meeting on the legality of drone use in different legal contexts in Washington DC in 2015 at Stimson with American and European diplomats and academics. A  Drone Directory was subsequently published.
